AI Efficacy and Data Quality

The Fall of the Laptop

5 minute read

Published:

I’ve been using laptops for over 20 years and during that time, I’ve seen them evolve from chonky bricks with shitty screens and poor battery life to thin, light, capable portable computers. More recent developments in this space have made me less interested in laptops than ever before and this isn’t just the result of the pandemic and that #WFH life… this trend started back when I got my hands on the Dell Latitude 5285 in 2017… To me, this is when things starting going downhill.

Job Change is Healthy

I’ve been quiet over the last couple of months because I’ve been going through a job change cycle. About a decade ago, I promised myself that every 5 years, I’d at least have a look around to see if there was something else that might interest me. The thought process behind this was relatively simple:

Elevating Your Doggos

4 minute read

Published:

Our dog breed of choice is the miniature dachshund. They are adorable, loving, and highly… portable? That portability does create some challenges around the house, though. When you want to treat your furbabies as equal family members, that means they should get access to all the furniture, right? All the beds and sofas at a minimum. To accomplish this you need ramps and/or steps. There are options available in the market for purchase, but in our experience, most of them are poorly made, too expensive for what you get, or don’t fit perfectly with your furniture.

Ergonomics in a #WFH World

The last year has been difficult for me physically. In August, I tore my right calf muscle playing soccer with my kids. During the long recovery and physiotherapy from that injury, I strained the MCL in my left knee. I was asking too much of my left leg while my right was healing. The recover from this second injury extended into early 2021. As someone who has always been very active, the immobility that came with these injuries was difficult.

Virtualized Household Gaming

We are a household of gamers. Alicia and I date back to the Nintendo days and now we have offspring who love games like Minecraft and Roblox. When we come together in the living room to game together, we play titles like Overcooked and platformers like Rayman. We’re more of a PC gaming family than a console family… so this has resulted in a couple of Home Theatre PCs (HTPCs) with gaming capabilities being deployed to our two largest televisions. So when you add these two to the gaming PCs on my desk and in each of the kids’ rooms… we’re up to five in the house. What’s wrong with that?

Getting Tricked Into Management

5 minute read

I never thought for a moment that I would end up in management. I was the introverted, hands on keyboard geek who got his start on the technical support side of the business. A few stars aligned (or collided) that fundamentally altered my career trajectory. I occasionally make reference to being “tricked into management”, so I thought I would tell the tale. I hope to tell it in a way that may help others who are unsure of where their technology careers may take them.

The Evolution of my Homelab

One of my positives from the pandemic has been having extra time to reconnect with my “hands-on” technology roots. This reconnection was jump-started by a technical issue. With the whole family working and learning from home, my network was under serious stress and we were regularly being disconnected from our Microsoft Teams or Google Meet calls. I had a router issue that forced me to roll up my sleeves and exercise my troubleshooting skills. That got the juices flowing and boy did things spiral from there.

This year marks my 20th year working in the technology industry. It’s a significant milestone and has me thinking back to the alternate career paths I could have / might have taken. When I went to St. F.X., I was on a track to get a degree in Accounting and then go on to Dalhousie Law. This alternate path never came to be as I ended up dropping out of St. F.X. while simultaneously falling in love with technology. It worked out and I wouldn’t change a thing.

Wireless Providers Suck

So Alicia and I have been waiting patiently for her existing contract with Telus to expire. We’ve whittled her monthly bill down over the last year to be about $37/month as she typically only uses the phone once or twice per month. It’s for emergencies, essentially. Introducing Sofie Kirk!

less than 1 minute read

Published:

Late yesterday morning, Alicia and I brought home the latest addition to the growing Kirk family. Little Sofie Kirk, a chocolate dapple mini-dachshund, is quite a character let me tell you. She’s chalk full of personality (similar to Oliver) and boy does she ever like to play. We were fortunate enough to get Sofie from the same breeder as Ollie and we know we’ll end up with an equally well-adjusted dog the second time around. I think genetics and how the dogs are handled as little puppies has a dramatic affect on long-term behavior.

UPN Cancels Star Trek Enterprise

Having a handle like Jim Kirk means that you have to be a Star Trek fan. I think it’s written in the contract somewhere. I’ve watched Trek my whole life, and I really love it. Not all the series’ have been great from start to finish; DS9 was weak in parts, for example. That being said, on the whole, Star Trek has been excellent Sci-Fi. Recently UPN announced that the latest series in the Star Trek Family, Enterprise, was to be cancelled. If you look at the numbers, it’s not that much of a surprise. Alicia is Back Together with Link.

1 minute read

I decided to surprise Alicia with a present this past weekend, so I stopped at BestBuy in Erie, PA on Friday evening and picked up a Nintendo Gamecube for her. She’s a nut for the Zelda-series of games, so the Gamecube was especially attractive to her. I picked her up a copy of “Zelda: The Wind Wakers” along with the GC so she was good to go. Needless to say she was excited about being reunited with her man Link (the heroic male character in the Zelda games). We then ran out the next day and picked up an extra controller and a couple of additional games (MarioCart and Super Smash Bros). So as you can imagine we had some fun playing video games over the weekend. I think she’s addicted to Zelda already (again). :grinning:
