UPN Cancels Star Trek Enterprise

Having a handle like Jim Kirk means that you have to be a Star Trek fan. I think it’s written in the contract somewhere. I’ve watched Trek my whole life, and I really love it. Not all the series’ have been great from start to finish; DS9 was weak in parts, for example. That being said, on the whole, Star Trek has been excellent Sci-Fi. Recently UPN announced that the latest series in the Star Trek Family, Enterprise, was to be cancelled. If you look at the numbers, it’s not that much of a surprise. Only 2.5 million viewers tuned in for last week’s episode.

Going forward, what does this mean for Star Trek? Will it go on hiatus for awhile until new, fresh ideas come forward? Or is it possibly gone for good and the only Star Trek fix we’ll get will be through syndication?

I posted about this on my other site, 2CPU.com, and some ideas have been kicked around. What about a series that focuses on another race like the Klingons, Romulans or Cardassians? Possibly even the Dominion. It would be a darker twist and the only interaction with Star Fleet would be through battle or diplomatic missions. Maybe that would breathe new life into a franchise that has been entertaining me since childhood.
