Chicago: It is a Musical.

The other day Kurtis and I were conversing back and forth via email and we eventually worked out this great idea; we were going to see a movie. The local Galaxy Cinema didn’t have much to offer that we’d not already seen: Shanghai Knights and Chicago were on our short list. As much as we wanted to enjoy yet another Jackie Chan movie, we opted for Chicago. It had received excellent ratings from Rotten Tomatoes and from the short previews I’d seen it appeared to be your typical murder/courtroom drama with a great cast.

Guess what folks, it was like… a musical. After the first five minutes had past and we’d already endured two songs, Kurtis and I knew we were in trouble. For those of you who’ve not experienced Richard Gere dancing and singing like a fiend, let’s just say my pain meter was blasting off the charts.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not bashing the genre. When my sister was in University she would regularly play in the orchestra for musicals such as Cabaret. I’d attend and enjoy the experience. However, I’m not sure that it transfers to the big screen very well. Popcorn + Pop + Raisinettes + Richard Gere singing his head off, is not a recipe for success or comfort.

In the end, Kurtis and I toughed it out. It actually wasn’t bad, I was just shocked, surprised and in no way prepared for the two hour onslaught of singing and dancing.
